Vintage ERA
Automobiles became widely used during the 1920's. The economic boom helped everyone afford a car and various methods such as mass production enabled the cars to be produced at a cheaper cost and therefore everyone could own one, before this cars were a recreational vehicles for the wealthy so now middle class people could own a car. Everybody had been waiting for a means of transportation that could get them to their local shop as quickly as possible. Soon enough nearly everyone had at least one car. Cars changed the way people commute it is also now one of the most essential items needed within every household.
Most cars produced in the 1920's could only produce low power. An average of 25 horsepower could be produced by these engines which seem very slow to us today. These days many low powered cars have a minimum of 90 horsepower which is significantly faster than the output of engines made in the 1920's. The 1930 model of the Cadillac V-16 is the first car to have ever housed 16 cylinders in the engine and had set new standards in terms of power, performance, comfort and luxury. In 1911 a major change in the starting of the car made it much easier and faster, Charles Kettering who was an employee of Cadillac created the starter motor and the electric ignition which also increased the safety as people used to sustain severe injuries while trying to manually starting up a car. During the 1930's majority of the cars produced were equipped with heaters and radios, the cars designs also dramatically changed and the body shape were designed to be more aerodynamic thus offering less wind resistance. At the beginning of the Thirties the cars also contained foot boards, sunshades on the windscreen and a separate drum which formed the headlights and also the rear headlights which were attached to the car by connecting rods.
In 1919 Malcolm Loughead invented the hydraulic brakes and three years after that in 1922 Hermann Rieseler invented the first automatic transmission which had a lockup clutch, two speed planetary gearbox and a torque converter.Low pressure balloon tires also replaced the previously used high pressure tires. Many vintage cars were produced during this era most notably the Austin 7 which was the most widely copied car and used as a template for many other cars during its time. During the 1930's most automobile manufacturers were offering much more beautifully designed cars than before, better engine sizes meant they could travel faster and new invention which was the automatic transmission meant that it was easier for everyone to drive. The cars were given a major face lift from the designs of the 1920's, for the new designs the cars were shaped to be streamlined. The car sales in this period didn't really take off because of the great depression which left everyone empty handed, only the really rich people who survived the depression could afford the luxurious vehicles. Most cars we use today are in fact based on the shapes of the cars that were produced in the 30's. Before the 30's the cars were having a dull and boring look and were commonly known as a four door square but after the 30's, cars began to look beautiful and were common eye catchers.
